AMD mATX, Mini-ITX Motherboards Are Significantly More Expensive Than Intel Equivalents

Historically, AMD motherboards have been less expensive than the equivalent Intel products. It’s one of the ways AMD has consciously attempted to position itself as offering a better value proposition than Intel. Buy an AMD motherboard, and you’ll not only save money on the initial purchase, but you’ll also be able to upgrade it for a longer period of time.

Right now, however, this equation has been flipped on its head, at least if you want a smaller-than-typical motherboard. We compared pricing on AMD’s AM4 chipsets going back to the original Ryzen launch against Intel’s LGA 1200 and LGA 1151 prices on 300-series motherboards. Comparing in this fashion allowed us to control for the impact of recent launches, and hopefully, offers a broader window into what people may be choosing to buy if coronavirus-related shortages are causing production problems for any specific motherboard. (Note: All data was gathered from Newegg, and only in-stock products were used for direct price comparisons.)

ATX board pricing tilts a little towards Intel, but chipset choice has a larger impact, so the net effect here is mostly a wash. If you plan to buy an ATX motherboard, you don’t need to worry. mATX and mini-ITX, however, show larger gaps.

Cheap mATX LGA 1200 (Comet Lake) Intel boards start at $60 on Newegg, while the cheapest B450-based motherboard is $80. On the plus side, B550M motherboards are also $80, so while you’ll pay a $20 premium over Intel, you won’t pay more for the newer chipset.

We also checked price on the 15th-cheapest motherboard in the stack, or the closest in-stock product. For AMD, that’s the Asus Prime B550M-A/CSM, at $135. For Intel, that’s the Gigabyte H310M S2P 2.0 LGA1151 board, at $75. The closest LGA 1200 board that’s more expensive than the H310M is a Gigabyte B460M DS3H motherboard at $79.

In mini-ITX, the gap between Intel and AMD motherboard pricing is even larger.

Fun Fact: While writing this story, I discovered Asus actually built a mini-DTX motherboard. DTX is an AMD standard alternative introduced some 13 years ago. It is not widely advertised or supported, to put it mildly.

The cheapest Intel mini-ITX board for LGA 1151 is the Gigabyte H310N, at $89. The cheapest LGA 1200 board is the Asrock B460M-ITX/AC, at $95.

The cheapest AMD AM4 mini-ITX board is supposed to be an Asrock A320M-ITX, at $99. The cheapest mini-ITX motherboard you can actually buy, however, is the Asrock X570 Phantom Gaming ITX/TB3, at $240. There are so few AMD AM4 mini-ITX motherboards in stock, I can’t really give you a meaningful 15th board price. The Asrock X570 Phantom Gaming ITX/TB3 is the 10th board on Newegg’s list as it is, and the 14th board costs $400. The 15th is not in stock. The 10th Intel board is the Asrock Z490M-ITX/ac LGA 1200, at $160.

You can have any AM4 mini-ITX motherboard you want, as long as you don’t want any of these.

These are large enough gaps to represent material differences in CPU price points. The $20 gap for cheap mATX boards isn’t much, but the 15th board gap is $56 for the LGA 1200 and $61 for the LGA 1151. There’s a $43 gap in the 10th position.

In mini-ITX, an X570 is a whopping $145 more expensive than an LGA 1200, and availability is so poor, we’re limited to a bare few comparison points. But the price difference between the two motherboards is less than the price gap between, say, a Core i5-10600K (6C/12T, 4.1GHz base, 4.8GHz boost, $285) and the Core i7-10700K (8C/16T, 3.8GHz base, 5.1GHz boost, $409).

Here’s what that means, in AMD-versus-Intel terms. Instead of comparing the 3700X ($273) against the Core i5-10600K ($285), you could argue it’s now fair to compare the 3700X against the Core i7-10700K, on the basis of overall system cost. The 3700X + Asrock X570 motherboard discussed above adds up to $513. The 10700K + Asrock B460M is $504.

There are basically two reasons why AMD boards might be running expensive. First, it’s possible that some coronavirus-related inventory issues have resulted in better Intel board availability than AMD availability. We only see real gaps in mATX and mini-ITX. If manufacturers have cut back on building boards that AMD buyers don’t choose all that often, it would explain the limited inventory and high prices.

Second, it’s possible that strong AMD retail demand is emptying store shelves as quickly as parts can be gotten. Our retail sales data arguably supports this trend. The reason I’m not sure it’s true is that I’m not sure how many desktop owners have begun preferencing mATX or mini-ITX over full-sized ATX motherboards. If most desktop builders still build with ATX, then we’d expect the impact of any shortage to be most visible in that segment. The fact that we’re seeing it in mATX and mini-ITX could reflect diminished production of those parts as opposed to extreme demand. It’s also possible both explanations are in play.

Regardless, it’s something to keep in mind when evaluating whether to buy AMD or Intel. Motherboard prices have historically favored AMD, and overall upgrade paths still do, but the current situation in mini-ITX and mATX boards rewards a more careful consideration of the market.

Microsoft Releases Emergency Windows Patch for Malicious Image Attack

Microsoft rolls out patches to Windows 10 on a more or less regular schedule these days, but it wastes no time when there’s a flaw that could put users at risk. The company is dealing with just such a scenario right now. A pair of bugs in Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019 could allow attackers to create corrupted image files that let them execute remote code on machines. Microsoft’s mechanism for patching this flaw is a bit unusual, though. 

The bugs, known CVE-2020-1425 and CVE-2020-1457, are inside the Windows Codecs Library. This component contains the necessary software to decode and render many different image and video formats in Windows. By causing a buffer overflow with malformed image files, the attacker can “trick” the computer into leaking important data and running code hidden in the image files. 

Microsoft says the bugs were disclosed privately, and it has no evidence of in-the-wild attacks. Remote code execution attacks are serious, but they used to be even more so. Address Space Layout Randomisation (ASLR) in modern operating systems helps reduce the danger by making attackers guess at where to insert their code. More often than not, the malicious program will just crash instead of taking over the system. However, the combination of CVE-2020-1425 and CVE-2020-1457 could be a problem. 

Since the attack vectors are non-public, Microsoft is being a bit coy about the specifics. Based on Microsoft’s vulnerability descriptions, CVE-2020-1425 and CVE-2020-1457 serve different functions, and they’re probably both needed for a successful hack. CVE-2020-1425 can be used to obtain data about the system’s memory configuration, and CVE-2020-1457 can most likely use that data to evade ASLR and execute the payload successfully. This would be a valuable vector to shadowy internet figures, but whoever discovered it did the right thing by disclosing it to Microsoft. 

These vulnerabilities could be particularly dangerous because many different programs like browsers, image galleries, and so on rely on the Windows Codecs Library. The good news is this is one of the easier bugs to fix because the library is the same across all affected systems. However, Microsoft has deployed a patched version of the library in the Windows Store — not via Windows Update. You don’t have to do anything to get the patch, but you can manually pull down updates in the Store if you don’t want to wait.

NASA Is Running Out of Time to Launch Perseverance River After Latest Delay

The Perseverance rover will set the stage by collecting samples from Mars.

Curiosity has been exploring Mars for years, and NASA has been planning its successor for almost as long. The Perseverance rover is nearly complete, but NASA has been forced to delay the launch yet again. The rover will now launch no earlier than July 30th, putting it perilously close to the end of the launch window. Missing the window would be a major setback for the agency’s Mars exploration plans. 

Perseverance, previously known only as Mars 2020, borrows most of its design features from the wildly successful Curiosity rover, but NASA has also made some notable improvements. For example, Perseverance has more durable wheels, which should prevent the punctures and warping seen on Curiosity’s wheels. There’s also a small helicopter on the underside of Perseverance that will help scout the Martian terrain. Naturally, the rover has a new generation of cameras and scientific instruments aimed at searching for signs of ancient life on Mars. 

Before Perseverance can search for anything, it has to reach the red planet. The latest delay is the third for the mission. NASA says it encountered an issue with the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket during a dress rehearsal test. A liquid-oxygen sensor reported anomalous data, which the team will need to analyze and repair. NASA initially wanted to get the rover packed inside the Atlas V rocket and launch on July 17th. Logistical issues have pushed the launch to July 20th and then to the 22nd. NASA is almost out of time with the big day currently set for July 30th. 

While Earth and Mars are the third and fourth planets in the solar system, they’re not always near each other. Since they orbit the sun at different speeds, they are often on opposite sides of the inner solar system. That’s also why Mercury is technically the closest planet to all the other planets when you average it all out. The most efficient way to reach Mars is to wait for its orbit to bring it close to Earth, which it will this month. NASA’s original launch window ran from July 17th to August 11th. When NASA delayed the launch this week, it also extended the launch window to August 15th. The agency might even be able to push out several more days, but any more than that and Perseverance would be unable to reach Mars before it moves out of range. 

ULA will need to address the oxygen sensor issue before it can mount the rover payload on the rocket. Once the rocket is prepped and at the launchpad at Cape Canaveral, NASA will have to contend with Florida’s famously unpredictable summer weather. If the timeline drags out past the launch window, NASA will have to mothball Perseverance and wait for the next Earth-Mars convergence in 2022. That would add hundreds of millions to the already high cost of the mission.

Amazon Un-Launches Crucible, Puts Game Back in Closed Beta

The advent of games-as-a-service has driven a great deal of change throughout the industry. New content delivery models have proliferated. The industry, as a whole, has pivoted away from single-player. Cosmetic purchases and loot crates have been major points of controversy. Games that arrived DOA and previously would’ve been written off as bombs (No Man’s Sky, Anthem) instead receive a great deal of long-term work and, in some cases, wind up eventually delivering something like they promised.

And sometimes, a company does something it could never have practically done before, like un-launching a game. Today, Amazon announced it was taking its new shooter, Crucible, offline and back into closed beta. In the past, only an MMO could really have pulled this off.

The company’s blog post avoids any mention of “un-launching” or “shutting down public servers,” in favor of “Starting tomorrow, Crucible is moving to closed beta.”

In its previous dev blog, dated June 4, Amazon had given a list of goals and projects it would work on now that the game was live, including retiring unpopular game modes, building out the one mode people liked most (Heart of Hives), and tools that players were asking for, including a voice chat system, a system to deal with players AFKing and ruining matches, an expanded ping system, and “potentially some form of mini-map.” The second phase was more vaguely described as adding “systems and polish.”

Now, all of that is changing. The game is going back into closed beta and you have until 12 PM Wednesday EST to download the game on Steam if you want to take part in the beta tests. One cool change that’s coming — at least, assuming you are enjoying Crucible — is that the developers are going to start joining players to actively solicit feedback. The dev team suggests joining their Discord server to find players to play with. Players are still invited to stream, write, and talk about the game online, almost certainly due to Amazon’s desire to ignite buzz about it in some fashion.

Crucible was developed by Relentless Studios and is the first major game release from Amazon Studios. It’s been in development since 2014 and launched on May 20, 2020, where it made more or less no splash whatsoever. Reviews were decidedly mixed when the game shipped, with ratings in the 4-6 range among sites that use numerical scores. With so many titles to choose from — Overwatch, Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Valorant are just a few — it’s never been clear what was supposed to draw players to the game. Comparisons to Battleborn (never a good thing) note that the game’s audience had vanished just eight days after launch. Kotaku noted on that day, there were fewer people watching Crucible streams than watching original EverQuest. The only time it put up serious signs of life is when Amazon paid streamers to play it. The same article notes that the matchmaking service has major problems, which isn’t the sort of thing you want to hear with a brand new multiplayer title.

As of today, there were only 150 players online in the game.

It’s entirely possible that Crucible will reemerge as a killer title. A number of games have. But it’ll have to try much harder to make a splash. Between the number of multi-player games competing for player attention and the ongoing difficulty of the Covid-19 pandemic, people’s attention spans are a bit shorter than typical.

Does Intel’s Lakefield SoC Measure Up?

You could be forgiven for being a touch confused about the performance Intel’s Lakefield SoC offers, if you’ve kept an eye on headlines the past few days. After the first review data popped up online, different publications have either praised the results or indicated they should be cause for alarm at Microsoft and Samsung HQ. So which is it?

Kind of both, depending on how you think about the chip. Let’s look at Notebookcheck’s data.

What’s Lakefield’s Competition?

The above question isn’t rhetorical. Lakefield — a 7W CPU with four Tremont CPU cores (no HT) and a single Sunny Cove CPU core — is no competition for a full-size Core processor, which is why it doesn’t shine in comparisons against those devices. Its single-thread CB15 performance lags the Core m3-8100y, 88.3 points to 96.2. It does better in multi-core, with a score of 255 versus 162. The m3-8100Y is arguably the best x86 comparison point for the chip because the Core M CPU is a 2C/4T product with a 5W TDP and a 1.1GHz base / 3.4GHz boost clock speed.

This pattern — weak single-thread, combined with better multi-thread relative to Core M — repeats in both Cinebench (R10, R15, R20) and in Geekbench 5.1. The m3-8100Y wins every single-threaded benchmark test, sometimes by a larger margin than others, but it loses every multi-threaded test, typically by a larger gap than it wins the single-thread.

This pattern continues in the browser-based benchmarks. The Galaxy Book S NotebookCheck is benchmarking is 1.2x faster than the Core m3-8100Y in JetStream 1.1. It’s 6 percent slower in WebXPRT 3, but the m3-8100Y takes 36 percent longer to complete Mozilla Kraken 1.1 than the Lakefield CPU does.

Techradar argues that it can hear Qualcomm grinning “from all the way over here,” but it’s not clear what the company would be grinning about. Currently, Windows on ARM is limited to 32-bit emulation for x86 compatibility, and emulation performance is hit-or-miss. Geekbench suggests that Lakefield offers better ST performance than the 8cx (797 points to 700) but worse multi-threading (1441 versus 2760). Qualcomm will likely surpass these targets with its next-generation CPUs, but Intel has an edge for now. THG’s writeup is more positive.

The 1.8x scaling in Geekbench 5.2 is so poor for Lakefield, it’s worth asking if there’s a breakdown somewhere in how the application is treating the CPU. I’m not saying that’s the case, but it’s weaker than what we’d expect. The 8cx shows a scaling factor of 3.46x, which might be explained by TDP differences. Either way, it’s a large gap — easily the largest in our tests.

Lakefield is faster than the 8cx in every browser-based benchmark that NotebookCheck ran on both platforms.

The reason why Lakefield might not look so great, especially when compared with other systems in this manner, is because low-power devices really don’t benefit when benchmarked directly against their bigger brothers. The best-case scenario is that the ultra-low-power product delivers some really killer battery life and efficiency metrics and, in exchange, gets nuked from orbit in every single benchmark. Most reviewers run a lot more benchmarks than they do battery life tests.

Because manufacturers tend to put a high premium on cutting-edge hardware with good battery life, devices equipped with power-sipping processors aren’t necessarily less expensive than their meatier alternatives. There’s a natural, understood difference between an iPhone and an iPad that makes it easy for people to grasp why one is slower than the other: The iPhone is smaller. Ultra-thin and light laptops are still lighter and thinner than regular systems, but the difference is less dramatic.

Notebookcheck hasn’t released its full data set, and without battery life, it’s impossible to evaluate how Lakefield performs in the first place. What seems likely, based on the data we’ve got in the review already, is that the chip is designed to improve multi-threading performance over Core M, without compromising too badly on single-thread. It beats the 8cx in browser tests and Geekbench single-thread and loses in Geekbench multi-threaded.

Battery life should be at least as good as Core M, though not as good as the 8cx. Whether the tradeoff will be worth it to go x86 versus ARM on the Galaxy Book S isn’t clear right now. The performance data points towards x86, but the battery life will likely point back towards ARM. We’ll just have to see how big each gap is once a larger suite of tests can be considered.

I’ve focused on CPUs because that’s the more interesting discussion. Graphics-wise, Lakefield leads against its Core M and Snapdragon competitors, but not by a large-enough gap to make this 7W chip any kind of gaming device. So while gaming and GPU performance are up, and up markedly, you won’t be using Lakefield to handle AAA gaming.

Lakefield looks faster than Core M in multi-threading, at least for now. Will it be sold at price points that help these devices actually move in volume? Probably not. But we’ll reserve judgment until we see more details on battery life and price, as more devices come to market. Performance-wise, Lakefield seems to slip ahead of Intel’s previous ultra-low-power platform, while being generally faster than the ARM Snapdragon competitor outside of Geekbench. But until we know more about battery life, we really can’t judge whether the performance/power tradeoff between Lakefield and big-core Intel CPUs is worth it.
