Why do we have a love affair for curved screens and devices? Because your brain finds curves beautiful.

Samsung curved TV

Have you ever stopped to wonder why we seem to have such an infatuation with curvy things? Why do we think that a curved smartphone or TV is better than the planar version? Why did we go gaga for the Nexus S, which had a curve that can probably be measured in fractions of a millimeter? Why has the highlight of CES for two years running been a curved Samsung or LG TV? According to some neuroaestheticists (my new favorite word), it has nothing to do with improved functionality, or even some kind of rational response -- it seems our brains are just hard coded to find curvy things more beautiful.

SpaceX unveils Dragon V2, the world’s first commercial manned reusable spaceship

SpaceX's Elon Musk inside the new Dragon V2 usable manned spacecraft

SpaceX has unveiled what it hopes will be the future of manned, commercial spaceflight: The seven-seater Dragon V2 spaceship. It is very similar to the current, unmanned Dragon resupply spacecraft, but with the new ability to soft 'land anywhere on Earth with the accuracy of a helicopter,' rather than the normal method of parachuting from the atmosphere into the ocean. This will allow the Dragon V2 to be reused up to 10 times before needing a full service, massively reducing the total launch cost. NASA currently pays Russia $63 million for a seat in a Soyuz capsule; a seat on the Dragon V2 would cost just $20 million. Viva la commercial space travel!

Microsoft shows off real-time universal speech translator for Skype, coming in 2014

Skype Translator: Universal translation between spoken languages, like a Babel fish

At the inaugural Code Conference in California, CEO Satya Nadella has revealed that Microsoft's real-time speech translation technology will finally make the jump from the mystical, bottomless pit of its R&D department to a consumer product: Skype. On stage at the conference, Nadella demoed a beta version of Skype Translator, which performed real-time translation of English to German speech, and vice versa. Skype Translator isn't perfect, but it's tantalizingly close to the creation of a Star Trek-like universal translator -- or Babel fish if you prefer -- that allows everyone in the world to communicate, even if they don't share a common language. Suffice it to say that such a feature would be of massive importance both socially and economically -- and, of course, it could be a huge money maker for Microsoft, too.

Solar Roadways passes $1.4 million in crowdfunding: Just short of the $56 trillion required, but not bad for a crazy idea

What a town with Solar Roadways road and sidewalk might look like

Over the weekend, the Solar Roadways project on Indiegogo reached its target of $1 million. At the time of publishing, that figure is now north of $1.4 million, with five days left to go. The concept is verging on utopian: By replacing the USA's concrete and asphalt roads with solar panels, we could produce three times more electricity than we consume, instantly solving just about every energy problem we have (geopolitical stuff, reliance on fossil fuels, CO2 production, etc.) It's not hard to see why Solar Roadways has attracted so much attention and money: On paper, it really does sound like one of the greatest inventions ever. In reality, though, where, you know, real-world factors come into play, it will probably never make the jump from drawing board to large-scale deployment.

MH370 satellite logs released, but redactions by Malaysian government will only fuel further conspiracy theories

GPS Satellite

Malaysian authorities, working with British satellite company Inmarsat, has released 47 pages of satellite logs that were used to track flight MH370 to the southern Indian Ocean. The timing on this release is significant, as Australia today announced that the deep-sea search for flight MH370 has been postponed for three months, pending a complete bathymetric (topographical) map of 60,000 square kilometers of the seabed where MH370 is thought to have crashed. As the search for the missing plane moves into its eleventh week, we yet again have to wonder whether we are looking in the right place or not. The futuristic dream of wirelessly charging your smartphone while you stand in line at the coffee shop may soon come to pass

Energous wireless power transfer demo, to an iPhone

A new company, called Energous, has devised a method of wirelessly transmitting power over long distances. Its prototype system can beam 10 watts, more than enough to charge your smartphone or tablet, over a distance of 15 feet -- and, rather importantly, it will track your device if you move around. The company hopes to commercialized its technology soon, with partner companies showing off the tech at CES in January 2015. It seems that the first generation of wireless charging -- those awful, short-range charging plates -- may finally be drawing to a close.

Tonight’s brand-new meteor shower could turn into a 1,000-meteors-per-hour storm

Geminid meteor shower, December 2012. 61 meteor frames from a time lapse shoot.

Fellow Earthlings! We may be in for a stellar delight tonight. For the first time ever, Earth will pass through the tail of comet 209/P LINEAR, creating a brand new, never-before-seen meteor shower. Because we don't know anything about them, the Camelopardalids have the potential to be one of the most dramatic meteor showers ever -- a so-called meteor storm -- or, on the other hand, there might not be more than a few dozen shooting stars per hour. There's only one way to find out: Stay up late tonight and look to the skies!

Scientists work out how create matter from light, to finally prove Einstein’s E=mc2

Hohlraum

Physicists in England claim they have discovered how to create matter from light, by smashing together individual massless protons -- a feat that was first theorized back in 1934, and has been considered practically impossible until now. If this new discovery pans out, the final piece of the physics jigsaw puzzle that describes how light and matter interact would be complete. No one's quite sure of the repercussions if matter can indeed be produced from photon-photon collision, but I'm sure something awesomely scientific will emerge before long.
