Among the many kinds of materials used to create new nano- and micro- technology, gold has emerged as the premier element primarily because of its unique opto-electronic properties. Researchers from Munich have recently used this 'plasmonic gold' to build what they are calling a microscale elevator, although the implications for significantly more far-reaching.
