When metals become insulators and back again, it’s math to the rescue

A recent paper by Carnegie's Russell Hemley and Ivan Naumov provides a new mathematical foundation that successfully predicts not only when external forces drive metals to become insulators, but also the reverse transition -- to make insulators conduct like metals.
