Nuclear detonations from 1945 to present plotted on a world map – video

This eerie visualisation was created by Ortibal Mechanics, an audiovisual collective based in Montreal. It begins in 1945, before picking up speed with hundreds of detonations over the following decades. Each one is colour-coded: red for atmospheric, yellow for underground, and blue for underwater.

Coder Ehsan Rezaie included every detonation he could cross-reference in both the Australian government’s geoscience database and this archive. The only specific omission is the 2013 North Korean test, which has only been verified by detection of seismic activity
