OnePlus started as a scrappy upstart making cheap but powerful phones. Over the years, it has moved upmarket and started to take on the major smartphone players. The new OnePlus 8 Pro finally addresses the last few missing features in OnePlus phones, but it’s pretty spendy. There’s also a slightly cheaper OnePlus 8 that’s lacking some of those fancy new features.
The two phones look almost identical with curved glass on the back, and a big curved screen on the front. OnePlus always uses the fastest flagship ARM processors available, so these phones both have the Snapdragon 865, and that means they’ve got 5G. There’s only support for sub-6 5G on the unlocked phones, but that’s more useful than millimeter wave anyway. The phones also sport 8-12GB of RAM and 128-256GB of storage, depending on the version you choose.
Both phones also run the latest Oxygen OS, which is based on Android 10. Unlike Samsung or LG, OnePlus doesn’t make arbitrary changes to Android. Oxygen OS is sleek and fast without all those redundant apps you’d see on other phones.
OnePlus is clearly pushing the 8 Pro as its new flagship phone. This device has a 6.78-inch 1440p OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate, just like the Samsung Galaxy S20 family. Around back, there’s a quad-camera array with standard, ultra-wide, telephoto, and color filter sensors. With the OnePlus8 pro, the company is finally putting that glass back to good use — there’s wireless charging inside, and it’s fast. You get standard 10W Qi wireless charging, but OnePlus’ custom Warp Charge wireless dock charges the phone at 30W, the same speed as its wired charging. The chassis is also IP68 rated for the first time.
The OnePlus 8 is a little smaller with a 6.55-inches display. It’s limited to 1080p and 90Hz like the last-gen OnePlus 7T. It also takes a step back in camera performance. There are three camera sensors on the back: standard, ultra-wide, and macro. The macro camera replaces the telephoto camera from the 7T, which was probably a cost-cutting measure. There’s no wireless charging or IP rating here, either.
While the smaller OnePlus 8 is the less impressive device, it’s also the one carriers will be pushing. Both T-Mobile and Verizon will sell the OnePlus 8, and Verizon’s version will add millimeter wave 5G. The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will be available unlocked from OnePlus and Amazon starting on April 29th. The OnePlus 8 will start at $699 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and the OnePlus 8 Pro will be $899 for the same configuration. The versions with 12GB of RAM and double the storage will cost $100 more.
