Big things are happening in the world of Android wearables, and not a moment too soon. Apple is only getting further ahead with the Apple Watch, but Samsung could have a chance to catch up a bit now that it’s working with Google on smartwatch software. The company’s Galaxy Watch 4 family will launch soon, and now we’ve got a better idea of how the new watches will look, thanks to a raft of leaked images from Android Headlines.
From all appearances, Samsung is pulling out all the stops. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic will be the more traditional of the two designs it will launch this year. The Watch 4 Sport has a smoother profile and it’s a bit less bulky, but the Watch 4 Classic could be confused with a non-smartwatch at a glance.
The body of the Watch 4 has all the hallmarks of any regular watch, including standard 20mm lugs and buttons along the right edge of the case. There will be aluminum and stainless steel cases available. Android Headlines contends that the premium stainless steel variant will have Gorilla Glass DX covering the screen, and the aluminum variant will have DX+ glass. The images also show the telltale textured edge of the ring around the screen, which all but confirms the rotating bezel will remain.
According to the leaked info, Samsung will make three different sizes of the Classic, allowing everyone to find the device that balances bulk and battery life that works for them. The watch will come in 42, 44, and 46mm sizes. Previously, Samsung’s watches came in just two sizes like the Apple Watch.
These devices will run the new Wear OS developed alongside Google, marking the end of Samsung’s Tizen wearable experiment. That means there will be many, many more apps available for the watches. At the same time, you’ll get Samsung’s enhanced health tracking and better smartphone integrations, which were missing from the old Wear OS. Samsung also recently revealed the One UI skin for Wear OS, so we know roughly what the OS will look like.
Samsung has yet to officially announce the watches, or the Unpacked event where they will be unveiled. The rumor mill points to August for the next Unpacked. The leaked renders show a date of the 28th on the watch face. Perhaps the devices will be announced in early August, and they’ll launch at the end of the month? Your guess is as good as ours right now.
