Leak: Surface Pro 8 Will Have 120Hz Screen, Thunderbolt 4

The Surface Duo 2 isn’t the only piece of unannounced Microsoft hardware making the rounds today. What appears to be a Chinese-language ad for the Surface Pro 8 has appeared on Twitter, promoting the computer’s Thunderbolt 4 ports and 120Hz screen, neither of which are available on the current Surface Pro devices.

The ad features a computer that we can only assume is the Surface Pro 8 — it looks almost identical to the Pro 7 in this image. Looking closer, you’ll see this laptop has lost the old USB-A ports. The Pro 8 is now ready for the future with a pair of Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports. It’s unclear if the laptop will also use one of those ports for charging, but past Surface computers have had the dedicated Surface Connector for power.

The next big improvement lauded by the leaked graphic is a new 13-inch display, which is a bit larger than the 12.3-inch currently in use. The screen will be upgraded to a 120Hz panel, making it the first Surface Pro to move beyond 60Hz. The resolution is uncertain, but the screen icon appears to read “2K” in a small, blurry font. So, that could be around the same 1824p as the Pro 7. The bezels are also smaller than past devices, one of the few visual changes to this year’s Windows slate.

Current Surface Pro hardware starts with just 128GB of storage, and there’s no way to add more or replace that drive after purchase. The Surface Pro 8 will change the game with a removable SSD, another first for the main Surface Pro lineup. This was previously an option in the Surface Laptops as well as the Surface Pro X and 7+.

Microsoft tends to skimp on RAM in Surface Pro devices, and there’s no indication from the ad that will change. It does, however, confirm the latest Intel 11th gen chips, plus Windows 11 out of the box. Microsoft is just a few weeks away from launching the new OS, but most existing Windows PCs will have to wait a long time for the update. Microsoft says picking up a new computer like the Surface will be the fastest way to get Windows 11. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait to be caught up in one of the upgrade waves — if your PC is compatible at all

We expect to get all the details on the new Surface Pro at Microsoft’s event this Wednesday (September 22). We have every reason to expect a new Duo smartphone will launch, but there are also rumors of a Surface Book refresh. The Surface Book will probably start well over $1,000, but the Surface Pro will probably be well under that mark to start. However, you’ll probably have to pay extra for the keyboard cover, as usual.
