Sega has not forgotten its North American fans. After announcing the Mega Drive 2 Mini Console for Japan, the company has clarified that the device will come to this side of the Pacific later this year. However, when it does, it’ll be called the Genesis 2 Mini. It’ll come packed with more than 50 games, many of which are still a mystery.
Mini retro game consoles are a relatively new phenomenon. Nintendo led the way with the NES Classic Edition, a device so popular that it was basically impossible to buy it for the suggested retail price of $60. It was common to see these devices priced at more than $100. It’s gotten even more expensive over the past six years — you’d have to pay over $200 to get that version of the NES now. Sega released the Genesis Mini in 2019, possibly garnering even more positive reviews than Nintendo did. It shipped with 42 classic games pre-loaded, along with a version of the classic three-button Genesis controller.
The Genesis Mini 2 improves on the original in several ways. First, it’s more powerful, allowing the inclusion of Sega CD titles. There will be more games overall, too. We don’t yet know the full list, but some of the initial examples include Sonic CD, Vectorman 2, Out Run, and Alien Soldier. You’ll be able to play those games with the new six-button Genesis controller that ships with the Genesis Mini 2. That will make some of the later Genesis and Sega CD titles much easier to play.
Back in the days of NES versus Genesis, Sega clearly had the edge in technology with its 16-bit console. However, Nintendo had several killer franchises like Zelda and Mario, while offering a deeper catalog of titles than Sega. However, when you cherry-pick the best titles and bundle them up in one of these mini consoles, the deeper bench isn’t really a factor, and Sonic can hold his own as a tentpole retro franchise. You can’t plug in a cartridge or download more games, so the bundled collection is all that matters.
SEGA Genesis Mini 2 blasts its way to North America on October 27th!

The Genesis Mini 2 will connect to any modern TV or display with an HDMI port — it even includes a cable. It will launch on October 27, and you can pre-order one today via Amazon (where it will apparently be exclusive). However, it’s bizarrely listed at $103.80. That’s about $20 more than the $75 Japanese price tag. It’s unclear if North America will get the optional Sega CD add-on. It’s $37 and purely cosmetic as Sega CD titles will play on the Genesis Mini 2 without it.
