Solid-state storage devices are slowly taking over everywhere that traditional hard drives used to rule, and the mobile market is no exception. Crucial’s X8 is the company’s newest external SSD, which is designed to be fast and durable. Let’s see if it performs relative to its price.
Design and Features
The X8 features a case constructed out of anodized aluminum with rubber attached at the ends of the drive to add some level of shock protection. Crucial said these drives should be capable of withstanding up to a 7.5-foot drop without breaking. The drive is not waterproof, though.
Setting up this drive is as simple as just plugging it in as it comes pre-formatted in exFAT. The drive utilizes the new USB Type-C port and comes with a compatible USB Type-C cable as well as a Type-A adapter.
There isn’t any software that comes pre-loaded onto the Crucial X8, but you can download Crucial’s Storage Executive program to perform firmware updates and check the health of the drive. If you plan to use the Crucial X8 as a backup drive, however, you will need to enlist the aid of a third-party app or track backups manually.
Benchmarks
Our sister site PCMag tested one of Crucial’s X8 1TB external SSDs. In PCMag’s Folder Transfer test, the Crucial X8 performed well compared against the other tested drives. Both Adata’s SE800 and SanDisk’s Extreme Pro performed slightly better, but just by a small amount.
Testing with Crystal DiskMark places Crucial’s X8 into an even more favorable spot in the lineup. It achieved the fastest sequential read performance score, but only by a negligible amount. It also came in second during the sequential write test, with Sandisk’s Extreme Pro alone outperforming it.
Conclusion
Overall, the performance numbers from PCMag’s tests look promising, but to determine the Crucial X8’s real standing in the market we last need to consider its price. Selling for $164.95 for the 1TB model, the Crucial X8 is among the lowest-priced and most affordable external SSDs on the market.
The Sandisk Extreme Pro costs $229.99 at the moment and Adata’s SE800 is just slightly higher than the Crucial X8 at $189.99. Given its strong performance and price tag, I’d recommend the X8 as an excellent choice for anyone needing an external SSD.
