Google teased the upcoming Pixel 5 and 4a 5G a few weeks back when it finally launched the long-delayed Pixel 4a. We only got to see a tiny sliver of the device at the time, but now we have the first reliable leak of the design. The new render appears to confirm previous leaks pointing to a simpler (and probably cheaper) flagship Pixel this year.
While this is not an official render or a photo of the real phone, there’s every reason to believe it’s accurate. This leak comes by way of OnLeaks, who regularly uses leaked CAD files to recreate phones prior to launch. OnLeaks has been dead-on with numerous devices in the last few years, and there’s no reason to think this will be any different. So, what can we glean from this leak? The Pixel 5 looks a lot like the Pixel 4a.
The display stretched from edge to edge like the 4a, and there’s the same small hole-punch camera in the upper left corner. These are the slimmest bezels yet on a flagship Pixel phone, but that might mean we’re losing the Soli “Motion Sense” module and the IR sensors for Face Match. On the other hand, many will be happy to see the fingerprint sensor making a comeback this year — it’s on the back of the phone, exactly where it is on the Pixel 4a. However, it doesn’t look like the headphone jack is coming along for the ride.
According to OnLeaks, the device will measure 144.7 x 70.4 x 8.1 mm, and the camera module will add 0.4mm. This is almost exactly the same size as the Pixel 4a, so a similar 5.8-inch screen is probably in the cards. The camera module in the renders has three sensors, a first for Google’s Pixel line. We’re probably looking at a wide, telephoto, and ultrawide, all of which will merge seamlessly in Google’s camera app.
Previous leaks point to a Snapdragon 765 ARM chip inside rather than the hugely expensive 865. That means probably no millimeter-wave 5G support, but there should be sub-6 5G with better battery life than you can get with the 865. Storage and RAM are up in the air, but hopefully, Google doesn’t skimp as it has in the past.
The Pixel 5 is shaping up to be a technological step backward for Google’s Pixel team after being so proud of Soli and Face Match on the Pixel 4. That phone, by the way, was discontinued after just 10 months. So, perhaps going back to basics was the right call.
